Careers in medicine for those who can’t do medicine

For a very long time a career in the medical industry meant being a doctor. It was a highly respected, well paid and important job, the kind of profession that brought with it respect and wealth. That was a long time in the past of course and now days doctors can be found everywhere and the profession is no more or less respected than those of lawyers or architects or teachers. A lot has changed, but the truth is that many parents still aspire for their children to work in the medical profession. But not everyone can afford to study medicine and not everyone boasts the marks that are required to make it into medical school. But the medical industry is more than just being a doctor, here are some alternative avenues for those looking to make it in the industry.

Doctors and hospitals need all sorts of pharmaceuticals and equipment and the sales representatives who call on the hospitals or doctors rooms can earn very well. You could be repping pharmaceutical or hospital supplies or hardware like wheelchairs or crutches, whatever it is, it is a lucrative business that puts you in close proximity to medical types, but you don’t have to study as hard or as long to land a job.

Paramedic

If you love the thrill of sirens and life and death situations, if you operate well under pressure and have clarity of thought in times of crisis, then working as a paramedic could be the thing for you. A lot of a nurses work is not glamorous; it’s changing bedpans and dressing wounds and such like, but the reality is that the more senior you are as a nurse the more things you are able to do, and although it is not quite the same as being a doctor, the senior nurses do a lot of the first line triage and treatment of patients, leaving the fully qualified doctors to take care of the big stuff.

Therapists

Aside from the usual doctors, the medical industry is filled with countless health professionals. People like Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Audiologist and Physiotherapists all play very important roles in the broader medical fraternity. The role of these health care professionals is two-fold. Firstly they are often the first line of treatment who help identify critical underlying issues. They can also play major roles in helping patients recover from major surgery or illnesses, helping them readjust to life post trauma and integrate back into the everyday world.
