Changes/Adaptations in the Music Production Industry Part 2
The music production industry has undergone changes or adaptations recently due to the latest advances such as those provided by streaming platforms. Among these technologies that are very important today, we find data analysis and recommendation solution integration into the production process. In the last 2-3 years, data insights have driven the industry towards making key decisions for music creation and consumption. This movement has brought about a shift to data-driven decision-making, making it more of a focused kind of music on streaming services like shorter catchy tunes. For the musicians to be in demand, they must do what the consumers want.
As we step into the music production industry, these advancements offer both possible advantages and disadvantages. Some of the benefits and advantages will be the use of data analytics, which enables audience preferences to become more transparent in the process of producing music, as well as the music industry's growing reliance on, and hence its ability to produce music according to the audience's likes and dislikes. Artists and labels can get much better at reaching and engaging audiences by adapting to the streaming-first environment.
Conversely, the big downside and disadvantages might be the pressure on artists to conform to the status quo rather than explore new ideas or styles. The imperative to write songs that fit into the mainstream chart for the sake of being innovative and different has led to a lack of flexibility in the music industry that could eventually turn out to be harmful. We should not only keep our eyes open to these developments in the field but also work with a team that can find common ground between the streaming champions' demands and ourpersonal beliefs and imagination while producing further works of art.
About Jesse Thompson
Jesse”JTJazz” Thompson, multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist, born in “The Land Of Funk” (Dayton, Ohio) attributes his humble beginnings in music to being captivated by a family of musicians: a father who was a professional drummer, Thompson’s mother—a church organist/pianist and his brother Marvyn Wheatley (who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave). Industry influences were soul/funk legends The Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman.
Driven to continue the legacy of great musicianship, Thompson became a member of the popular Columbus-based, R&B/Jazz group NexLevel for several years. The collectives released two albums, a string of singles, and shared stages with countless notable artists.
In 2021, the impact of the global pandemic deeply inspired Thompson to write and release the up-tempo, feel-good melody, “Weekend Groove,” ft Althea Rene which catapulted the musician into solo-artist status. The well-received track has garnered close to 200K Spotify streams to date.
