But survival has always been hard when it comes to rising up in the hierarchy and thrive thereupon. When we talk of the internet, we talk of a slightly different world that has its own rules and laws. One such law of this world is SEO that drives the content of this world around. SEO does not mean Google, but considering the mighty market share that it holds, around 93%, people talk of it when they talk of SEO. But where are the gurus who teach of these laws and help newbies guide through to fame? Here come the SEO agencies – Such as Australia's best link building company – who breathe in the updates around SEO and breathe out their expertise to guide people through this wilderness. But what is this SEO and wherefrom has it come?

SEO: A brief history of its times.

Back in the 1990s when the internet was the talk of the streets and www the prologue, there many companies were trying to be that omnipresent entity in this world who would tell everyone where anyone is. Search Engine companies were rising and falling, but 1994 saw two Stanford students (Jarry Wang and David Filo) who would create Yahoo. Yahoo was initially an internet bookmark list and the directory of some interesting websites. Who would not want to visit some interesting websites? Its workflow was that people manually would submit their addresses manually into Yahoo that it would use later on to show those seeking them. This was the very basic idea of SEO back then, which sure was to evolve in some future time. SEO

The cries and crawls of Backrub - The infant of the internet.

It was Stanford again wherefrom came two innovative minds – Larry Page and Sergey Brin – who created a web service that would rank websites based on inbound links and how popular they were. It was called Backrub. Backrub would come to be called Google very soon. Google was founded in the year 1998, and it used the Pagerank algorithm that worked on how much is the page likely to be reached by those surfing the internet. Algorithms are the mathematical functions that decide how the search engine would behave when asked a query. Search Engines were not intelligent back then because of the novelty of this field, and people used to trick them down with irrelevant tags and keywords, which would decrease the trustworthiness of their performance. Google introduced many updates for this, which introduced many big changes that got lauded by those using white-hat techniques and cursed by those using black-hat. These updates would call forth the rise of SEO agencies around the world that would rise as US', UK's, India's, Australia's best link building company. SEO companies analyze Google updates and use them to help websites offer quality content to a wide set of populations.

  • The 2003 Florida update: It was the very first update that worked on shooting those using the spammy techniques to rank higher on the page by stuffing irrelevant rags and keywords. It introduced a strategy named "Filter Test" that inflicted many retailers who used affiliate marketing.

  • The 2005 Jagger update: The update was introduced in three faces that focused on targeting unusual linkings, spam-seeming link-building, paid links, etc. The same year also saw BigDaddy update that focused on how Google would treat the URL issues (canonicalization and redirections).

  • The 2009 Vince Update: This update saw criticism for its lean towards big brands. Google told that world that the internet world is becoming a cesspool and big brands could be the solution. After the update, big brands had suddenly started to appear in the search results. They said it to be the solution for providing quality to people. But somewhere, it was also obstructing new brands to rise. This same year also saw the Caffeine update that focused on fast crawling, indexing, and ranking in real-time.

  • The 2010 MAYDAY update – Later around April and May, a significant drop was noticed by webmasters in their long-tail traffic, and thus this may-day may-day call for the rescue.

  • The 2011 Panda Update: The internet was seeing a strong influx of websites, and this included the quality and the crap. People were using foul tactics to rise higher with low-quality content. This update was to target those websites with bad quality content and a high ad-to-content ratio. This update had affected up to 12% of search results.

  • The 2012 Penguin update: Another major update that targeted over-optimization, over-linking, with penalties for the same. It was to adjust a number of factors around spam and keywords stuffing.

  • The Hummingbird update from 2013: Considered one of the important updates, this was focused on matching the content and the user intent. Now it was possible to rank higher even if did not have the exact matched phrase.

  • The 2015 Rankbrain update: Machine Learning was ready to be introduced into the search engine algorithm. It was to support Hummingbird, in which the machine would try to learn the semantics behind the search queries. RankBrain was announced to be the third most influencing factor. Google now would go beyond just the query searched and consider factors like synonyms, implied words, and personal search history.

  • The 2018 Medic Update: Google was now focusing on things apt of impacting the decisions directly related to life. Medical websites, finance, law, education, etc.

  • The 2019 BERT update: Technology had upgraded much till this time and NLP (Natural Language Processing) was introduced to make machines understand and interpret the search queries in an improved way. It was to further assist the machine to better understand the meaning behind queries and matching it with the content that would fit best.

  • And now Artificial Intelligence would soon impact SEO in major terms.

SEO: A brief anticipation of its times.

With the arrival of Artificial Intelligence, SEO is going to see some changes in its behavior. The main focus would be laid onto deep learning and Natural Language Processing. It would be something like if you have downloaded the second season of Dark, and you go on to search Dark again, Google might suggest you season the third on its own. Or if you are reading some mail and then go on to search a phrase you do not understand, Google might predict to you your query, compare it to other similar queries raised before, analyze their time spent and experience, and show you the best result possible. Now visual content would need optimization, Quality and its relevance would be preferred over mere keywords; A.I. would read the time spent on a website and the linking pointing to it, thereby adjusting its ranking accordingly; work would be done around voice search queries, tone detection, mobile-friendliness, and past user experience. More good things are about to come.
