Huracanes como Lorenzo, Dorian y María pueden ser desastrosos para los humanos y sus propiedades[1], pero algunos peces han evolucionado exitosamente en estos climas severos.

Nuestro equipo científico estudia cómo los eventos climáticos extremos afectan a los peces de río en Puerto Rico[2]. La isla es ideal para examinar los efectos ambientales y humanos[3] sobre los peces de agua dulce, ya que Puerto Rico tiene solo nueve especies nativas[4] y, al contrario de lo que ocurre en islas caribeñas de menor tamaño, en Puerto Rico hay muchos ríos – 46, para ser exactos.

Numerosos peces exóticos, introducidos por los humanos durante el siglo pasado, compiten por alimento y hábitat con especies puertorriqueñas como el Olivo, que puede escalar cascadas, el poderoso Dajao, que puede nadar en corrientes fuertes, y la Guabina, el depredador más voraz.

A estos peces nativos se les encuentra a través del Caribe y su conservación es una prioridad ambiental en la región. Los peces nativos están perfectamente adaptados a sus ambientes y proveen servicios a los humanos, como fuente de alimento y en el transporte de nutrientes[6]. Su presencia es indicadora de ecosistemas saludables y de aguas limpias[7].

Después de que el huracán María azotara la isla en el 2017[8], encontramos que solo las especies no nativas - y solo las no nativas - habían sido diezmadas por la tormenta.

Miles de peces exóticos, que están adaptados para sobrevivir ante sequías[9] - pero no ante crecidas y flujos extremos - terminaron río abajo durante el huracán María, algunos incluso en el océano. Muchos murieron por los traumas que causa la crecida o por exposición al agua salada.

Los peces nativos, al contrario, no se vieron afectados por el huracán[10]. La forma de sus cuerpos y su comportamiento están diseñados para sobrevivir en corrientes rápidas y fuertes. Los peces puertorriqueños sufren más con las sequías, ya que se les dificultan las migraciones reproductivas y conseguir alimento cuando hay poca agua.

Los grandes huracanes, en resumen, restablecen el balance de los ríos en Puerto Rico, favoreciendo a los peces nativos sobre los introducidos. Lo mismo ocurre con los ríos del resto del Caribe.

¿Y qué peces lograrán ganar la batalla por los recursos en las aguas caribeñas? La respuesta quizás cambie con el clima.

Las predicciones climáticas indican que el Caribe vivirá ambos extremos en el futuro[11], más huracanes catastróficos y más sequías fuertes[12].

Con la ayuda de nuestro equipo de trabajo y los estudiantes graduados, Gus Engman, Bonnie Myers y Ámbar Torres, estamos haciendo experimentos para entender mejor las interacciones entre los peces nativos y los exóticos en Puerto Rico.

Esta información nos permitirá modelar el balance futuro entre las especies de río - y, con suerte, ayudar a mantener nadando a los peces nativos del Caribe.
